Google Ads for boat hire and yacht charter in Ibiza: keywords, languages and budget

Someone searching for "boat hire Ibiza", "yacht charter Ibiza" or "Formentera boat trip" has already decided to get out on the water. The only question is who with. That is why Google Ads for boat rental in Ibiza is one of the most direct ways to fill your calendar, as long as the campaigns are built around how guests search rather than how you describe your business.
This guide covers grouping keywords by intent, the negatives that save money, handling languages after the change Google rolled out in September 2026, which location setting to choose and how to set a budget from your own numbers.
Why Google Ads suits boat hire and charter
Organic search takes months to pay off, and the Ibiza season is only so long. Google Ads puts you in front of people searching right now, from day one, and lets you choose the language, country, time of day and budget. For a business selling days at sea between May and October, that control is valuable.
But ads only buy visits. If guests land and cannot find a guide price, what each trip includes or how to message you on WhatsApp, you are paying for clicks that never turn into bookings. Before spending, check the fundamentals covered in how to get more yacht charter bookings in Ibiza.
Keywords: group by intent, not by volume
A common mistake is to throw "boat Ibiza" and twenty variations into one ad group. A family looking for a small self-drive boat and a group after a 30-metre crewed yacht do not want the same advert or the same page. Split your ad groups by what the guest wants to buy:
| Intent | English examples | Other languages | Landing page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-drive, no licence | boat hire without licence Ibiza | alquiler barco sin licencia Ibiza | Licence-free boats with daily prices |
| Skippered day trips | private boat trip Ibiza, skippered boat hire Ibiza | alquiler barco con patrón Ibiza | Skippered trips, routes and inclusions |
| Luxury yachts | yacht charter Ibiza, superyacht charter Ibiza | noleggio yacht Ibiza | Individual yacht pages and a proposal request |
| Formentera | Formentera boat trip from Ibiza | excursión barco Formentera, location bateau Formentera | Formentera trip page with timings |
| Sunsets and celebrations | sunset boat trip Ibiza, hen party boat Ibiza | barco atardecer Ibiza | A dedicated product page with photos of that moment |
Note the British angle: UK guests tend to say "boat hire" where Americans say "boat rental", so cover both. Use phrase or exact match for the terms that actually sell, and check the search terms report weekly during the season. That is where you find the searches slipping through, which become negative keywords. In Ibiza, a few are almost guaranteed:
- Ferries and tickets: "Ibiza to Formentera ferry", "timetable", "tickets". Ferry passengers are not charter guests, and "boat Ibiza Formentera" mixes both intents.
- Jobs and training: "jobs", "crew vacancies", "course", "qualification", unless you offer them.
- Buying and selling: "for sale", "used", "buy a boat".
- Products you do not sell: if you do not run large party boats, exclude those searches so you are not paying to attract the wrong crowd.
Languages and location: what changed in 2026
Search campaigns used to carry a language setting. According to Google Ads Help on language targeting, from September 2026 that campaign-level setting is removed from Search campaigns: ads are matched based on the language they are written in, and Google uses the search term language plus the user's language settings and preferences to serve the best ad in a language they understand. The same page says that in Performance Max the setting no longer applies to Search Network ads.
For a charter business serving guests from across Europe, the takeaway is simple: the language of the advert now does the targeting. Write native adverts for each language (not machine translations), keep one language per ad group and send every advert to a page in the same language. If your site is not there yet, start with our guide to multilingual websites for Ibiza businesses.
Location is the other half. Google Ads Help on advanced location options describes two settings:
- Presence or interest (Google's default and recommended option): reaches people who are, or regularly are, in the area and people who have shown interest in it. Targeting Ibiza this way can reach guests planning from London, Manchester or Milan.
- Presence: only people who are likely to be, or regularly are, in the location. Google suggests it when you only want to reach people physically there, which is exactly the case for a "tomorrow's trips" campaign aimed at guests already in Ibiza and Formentera.
Many charter businesses end up with two campaigns: a planning campaign on presence or interest, and an on-island campaign on presence, focused on mobile and on the hours when people plan the next day. We cover the second in last-minute charter bookings in a short season.
Budget: build it from your own numbers
There is no right figure for everyone. Cost per click varies by keyword, language, month and how hard competitors push that year. What you can do is work out what a booking is worth paying for, and work backwards.
- Margin per booking. What a typical trip leaves you after fuel, skipper and cleaning.
- Affordable cost per booking. The share of that margin you are willing to spend winning it. With made-up figures: if a trip leaves you €400 and you are happy to spend a quarter of it, your ceiling is €100 per booking.
- Estimated cost per click. Google Ads Keyword Planner gives ranges by term and country.
- Conversion rate. Use your website's if you track it; if not, start cautiously and adjust with data from the first few weeks.
With those numbers you can tell whether a keyword can pay before spending on it. On timing, start before May for guests planning from abroad, push the on-island campaign hardest in July and August, and do not switch everything off in September: plenty of late-season guests decide late.
Tracking and a pre-launch checklist
Without tracking, Google Ads is a gamble. Set up paid bookings, enquiry forms, WhatsApp clicks and calls as conversions, and give each an approximate value so you can compare campaigns. If most bookings close on WhatsApp, note where each guest came from in the chat: it is the only way to know which adverts fill the boat.
The landing page matters as much as the advert. Each ad group should lead to the page for the boat or trip it promotes, in the right language, fast on mobile and with the booking button in view. We cover that page in what a boat rental booking website needs.
- Ad groups split by intent (licence-free, skippered, yachts, Formentera, sunset).
- Native adverts for each language, one language per ad group.
- Negative list covering ferries, jobs, courses and boat sales.
- Location settings checked: presence or interest for planning, presence for on-island.
- Conversions set up for bookings, enquiries, WhatsApp and calls.
- Landing pages in the advert's language, with a visible "from" price.
- Maximum cost per booking worked out before setting the budget.
- Search terms report reviewed weekly in season.

Frequently asked questions
How much should a boat hire business in Ibiza spend on Google Ads?
It depends on your keywords' cost per click, your conversion rate and what you can afford to pay per booking. Work out an affordable cost per booking from the margin on a typical trip, check ranges in Keyword Planner and start with a small campaign you can measure properly.
Can I still target languages in Google Ads?
According to Google Ads Help, from September 2026 Search campaigns no longer have a campaign-level language setting: ads are matched by the language they are written in. Write native adverts in each language and send them to pages in that same language.
Which negative keywords should a charter company use?
Anything that attracts people who will not book: ferry and ticket searches, jobs and crew vacancies, courses and qualifications, boats for sale and products you do not offer. Review the search terms report weekly in season and keep adding to the list.
Should I target Ibiza or my guests' home countries?
With the default presence or interest setting, targeting Ibiza also reaches people abroad who show interest in the island. For a same-day or next-day campaign, presence alone can make sense, so you only reach people already in Ibiza or Formentera.
