What a boat rental booking website in Ibiza really needs

A boat rental booking website has a very specific job: let someone in London, Milan or on a sunbed in Santa Eulària pick a boat, see whether it is free, understand what is included and book without having to ask you anything. When it works, it sells for you around the clock. When it does not, it floods your WhatsApp with questions or sends guests to a platform that takes commission.
This guide covers what an Ibiza charter or boat hire website cannot do without, from individual boat pages to cancellation terms, and ends with a checklist to run through before the season. It is written with international owners in mind, whose guests and staff may not share a first language.
Boat pages: everything a guest needs to decide
The boat page is the hardest-working page on your site. It is where adverts land, what partners link to and what guests forward to the group chat. It should answer every question before anyone asks it:
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Length, maximum guests, cabins and heads | The group sees immediately whether they fit and can sleep aboard |
| Skippered or self-drive, and the licence required | Stops bookings from people who cannot legally helm the boat |
| Departure marina with a map | Marina Ibiza, Botafoch, Sant Antoni or Santa Eulària: guests need to know where to go |
| A "from" price by season | Low, mid and high season; without a price, many guests never enquire |
| Inclusions and extras | Skipper, fuel, cleaning, drinks, water toys, a berth in Formentera |
| Suggested routes | Es Vedrà, Espalmador, Ses Illetes: they help guests picture the day |
| Real photos and a short video | Of your boat, not the shipyard brochure |
| Deposit, cancellation and weather terms | Removes doubt right before payment |
If you run a larger fleet, add simple filters (party size, skippered or not, price, marina) and a comparison view. What you should avoid is hiding the fleet behind a "request information" form.
Availability, booking and payment: fewer steps, more bookings
Next, decide how the sale closes. There are two models, and plenty of businesses use both:
| Model | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Instant booking with payment | Licence-free boats, scheduled trips, fixed-price day charters | Availability always up to date and synced with platforms |
| Enquiry and proposal | Crewed yachts, week-long charters, events and large groups | Replying fast with a tailored proposal, not a generic PDF |
Either way, keep the form short: date, party size, boat and contact details. Everything else can wait. A few elements make a real difference:
- One calendar. If you also sell through marketplaces or brokers, availability must come from a single source. A boat sold twice in one afternoon costs more in refunds and bad reviews than the booking was worth.
- Deposit and balance. Many charter businesses take a deposit on booking and the balance before boarding. Show amounts in euros, not percentages guests have to work out.
- Card payment and familiar methods for international guests, through a secure payment gateway.
- Instant confirmation by email and WhatsApp, with meeting point, time and what to bring.
- WhatsApp always visible, as help rather than the only route to book.
Think about the back office as well as the guest. Your skippers, office staff and any partners taking bookings need to see the same calendar, get a notification for every new booking and know the meeting point and party size without digging through emails. If the system is awkward for the team, availability drifts out of date within a fortnight of the season starting.

Clear terms: cancellations, weather and cooling-off rights
At sea the weather decides, and guests know it. What worries them is their money. State on the site, and show before payment, who decides whether a trip goes ahead in strong wind (the skipper, for safety), what guests can choose if a trip is called off (a new date, a refund or whatever you offer) and the deadlines for cancelling on their side.
There is a legal detail many owners from outside Spain miss. The official consumer site Consumo Responde (in Spanish) explains that the 14-day withdrawal right for distance contracts has exceptions under Spain's Royal Legislative Decree 1/2007, including vehicle hire, catering and services related to leisure activities where the contract sets a specific date or period. In practice, for a trip booked on a fixed date your cancellation policy is what counts, so write it carefully and have your adviser check it.
Also spell out what paperwork guests need (a recognised licence if the boat requires one, ID), the security deposit and how it is returned, plus a note on how you look after the environment: in the Balearics, anchoring on Posidonia seagrass is banned as a general rule, and saying that your routes respect it comes across as professional.
Languages, speed and SEO so guests can find you
A booking site that does not show up on Google relies entirely on adverts and platforms. Three decisions help you get found:
- A complete version per language, each with its own URL. English and Spanish at the very least; Italian, French or German if those guests are a big share. Translation is not enough: each market searches differently ("boat hire" in the UK, "boat rental" in the US, "noleggio barca" in Italy).
- Destination and product pages: Formentera day trips, sunset cruises, licence-free boat hire, yacht charter. Each answers a specific search and brings traffic your homepage never could.
- Speed on mobile. Optimised photos and video, because guests book on their phones, often on beach-grade signal.
Then join it all up: the website button on your Google Business Profile should lead to the right page, and every advert to the matching boat page in its language. For an idea of a charter site that also impresses, try Halcyon, our concept charter site with a real-time 3D ocean and route map.

Frequently asked questions
What should a boat rental company's website include?
A page per boat with capacity, whether a licence or skipper is needed, departure marina, guide price, inclusions and real photos; up-to-date availability; booking or enquiry in a few steps; clear cancellation and weather terms; visible WhatsApp; and complete versions in your guests' languages.
Instant booking or enquiry form?
It depends on the product. Instant booking with payment suits licence-free boats, scheduled trips and fixed-price day charters. Enquiries work better for crewed yachts, week-long charters and events. Many businesses offer both.
Do guests have 14 days to cancel a boat trip booked online in Spain?
According to Spain's Consumo Responde, the 14-day withdrawal right does not apply to, among others, leisure services or vehicle hire when the contract sets a specific date or period. That makes your own cancellation policy what counts. Have your adviser review it.
How do I avoid double-booking a boat?
Run availability from a single calendar or booking system that syncs with the platforms you sell on, and block the date as soon as the deposit lands, not at the end of the day.
